In recent developments, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has voiced concerns about what he perceives as a slowdown in British support for Ukraine. He’s called for the removal of restrictions on certain UK-supplied weapons, particularly the powerful Storm Shadow missiles, which have a range of about 155 miles.
Push for More Military Support
Zelensky’s call for increased support comes as Ukraine has been actively engaging in military operations, including an incursion into Russia’s Kursk region. The Ukrainian President argues that the operation is necessary to create a buffer zone and prevent further attacks from Moscow. While the UK has allowed the use of its donated weapons on Russian soil as part of Ukraine’s self-defense, the Storm Shadow missiles remain restricted for use beyond Ukraine’s borders. Zelensky’s team believes that lifting these restrictions could be a game-changer in the ongoing conflict.
Zelensky’s Plea on Social Media
Taking to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Zelensky emphasized the urgency of his request. “We are doing everything possible to provide our warriors with the necessary weapons and reinforcements,” he stated. He stressed the importance of removing barriers that limit Ukraine’s ability to weaken Russian positions, noting that long-range capabilities are crucial for answering the most pressing strategic questions of the war.
A Call for Continued UK Leadership
Zelensky praised the UK for its leadership throughout the conflict, highlighting the significant impact of British arms, political support, and assistance to Ukrainian society. However, he expressed concern that this support has recently slowed down. “We will discuss how to fix this because long-range capabilities are vital for us,” he added, underscoring the effectiveness of Ukrainian forces in defending their nation’s independence.
UK Government’s Response
In response to Zelensky’s comments, a UK government spokesperson reiterated Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer’s unwavering support for Ukraine. The spokesperson highlighted the UK’s commitment to providing £3 billion a year in support to Ukraine, alongside the £12.5 billion already pledged since February 2022, of which £7.6 billion is designated for military assistance.
Recent Military Aid to Ukraine
The UK has accelerated its delivery of lethal aid to Kyiv, including a significant new package of military support. This package comprises a quarter of a million rounds of 50-calibre ammunition, 90 anti-armour Brimstone missiles, 50 small military boats, 40 de-mining vehicles, and 10 AS-90 artillery guns. Additionally, Ukrainian forces have received 61 bulldozers and ongoing support for previously gifted AS-90 artillery systems.
Continuing the Fight
As Ukrainian forces continue their operations in the Kursk region and beyond, Zelensky’s call for expanded support from the UK reflects the ongoing challenges his country faces. The Ukrainian President remains focused on securing the resources and international backing necessary to maintain momentum in the conflict and ensure Ukraine’s long-term security and independence.
