Young Mother of Two from Utah Raises Over $1 Million for Her Funeral After Terminal Cancer Diagnosis Shakes Her Family’s Future

In a touching story that highlights the power of community support, a young mother from Utah has raised over $1 million for her own funeral after receiving a heartbreaking diagnosis of terminal cancer.

Erika Diarte-Carr, just 30 years old, learned on September 18 that she had only three months to live, prompting her to start a GoFundMe campaign to alleviate the financial burden on her family during this difficult time.

A Life-Altering Diagnosis

Erika’s journey began in May 2022 when she visited the hospital for a shoulder injury.

During this visit, doctors diagnosed her with Stage 4 small cell lung carcinoma, a rare and aggressive form of cancer.

Over the next two years, she faced numerous health challenges, ultimately leading her to decide to stop treatment.

She wanted to focus on creating lasting memories with her two young children, Jeremiah, 7, and Aaliyah, 5.

Unexpected Generosity

Initially, Erika set a modest goal of $5,000 for her fundraiser.

However, she was overwhelmed by the response from friends and strangers alike, quickly surpassing her goal and raising over $1 million.

“It happened overnight. I never expected that,” she shared with ABC4.

“I never thought I would have a big funeral service or that so many people would reach out to help me. I’m just in shock… so grateful for everyone who has been there.”

The Impact of Cancer

When she received her diagnosis, doctors discovered multiple tumors that had spread to various parts of her body, including her bones.

Erika reflected on how this devastating news changed her and her children’s lives forever.

“In that moment, mine and my kids’ entire lives had changed forever, as well as all of those around us,” she wrote on her fundraiser page.

In January, Erika faced another blow when she was diagnosed with Cushing Syndrome, a hormonal disorder resulting from excessive cortisol levels.

This condition led to a host of additional health issues, further complicating her situation.

“It caused swelling, difficulty walking, and many of the health problems I have now,” she explained.

Making the Most of Time

When the prognosis of three months to live was delivered, Erika had to make a tough choice about her treatment options.

“I decided to stop treatment because I wanted to spend those last three months with my children, making the best of it instead of being sick from the medications,” she said.

Now, Erika is dedicated to spending quality time with her kids, planning adventures that will create cherished memories.

“We’re organizing a family trip and planning to go camping on our family land. I want to make sure we create lasting memories together,” she shared.

Embracing Life

As Erika navigates this challenging chapter of her life, her focus remains on her children and the legacy she hopes to leave behind.

With the support of her community, she is determined to fill her remaining time with love, laughter, and unforgettable moments, ensuring that her kids feel cared for and cherished even after she’s gone.
