A British soldier has found himself at the center of a sensational court case.
Daniel Khalife, a 23-year-old who was recently accused of leaking sensitive information to Iran, reportedly aspired to be a double agent for MI6, the UK’s intelligence agency.
This revelation emerged during court proceedings held yesterday.
The Great Escape
Khalife’s alleged escape from Wandsworth Prison in September 2023 triggered a massive manhunt across the country.
After being detained on espionage charges, he managed to evade capture for several days.
The court was informed about his audacious attempt to flee while under serious allegations.
A Meeting in the Park
The Woolwich Crown Court heard how Khalife had set up a meeting with an Iranian “agent” in a Barnet park.
During this rendezvous, he was given a suspicious package disguised as a “dog poo bag” containing £1,500.
Prosecutor Mark Heywood described this as a crucial moment in Khalife’s alleged betrayal of his country, as he was said to have shared classified information from his military role with Iranian operatives.
A Young Spy’s Ambitions
The prosecution painted a picture of Khalife as a young man fascinated by espionage from a tender age.
Since he was 17, he had harbored dreams of working for MI6, even reaching out to the agency back in 2019.
After enlisting in the British Army, he trained in a sensitive corps that dealt with secure communications, all while plotting to leak vital secrets.
A Startling Background
Khalife, who grew up in Kingston, south London, under the influence of his Iranian mother, began his pursuit of intelligence-related material as early as 2018.
His initial attempts included contacting someone associated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
However, he later claimed to the police that this was a “double-bluff” to prove his worth to UK security services.
The Plan Unfolds
On August 11, 2019, Khalife visited Mill Hill Park, where he reportedly took a photo of a document concealed inside a dog poo bag.
Shortly after, he sent an email to MI6 under an alias, claiming to have received $2,000 for producing a fake document for the Iranian government.
In the email, he expressed his desire to become a double agent, believing he could leverage his connections in Iran for the UK’s benefit.
A Mixed Agenda
Prosecutor Heywood emphasized that while Khalife did make attempts to contact UK security agencies, his true intentions appeared to lie with Iran.
After being arrested and subsequently released on bail, he allegedly fled his barracks in January 2023, leaving behind what was described as a “bomb-like apparatus.”
A Bold Escape
Khalife’s escapade took another dramatic turn when he allegedly escaped from HMP Wandsworth by hiding under a food delivery truck on September 6, 2023.
Despite the severity of the charges against him, he has firmly denied all allegations, including gathering information beneficial to an enemy, evading custody, and orchestrating a bomb hoax.
