Former Kaizer Chiefs captain and Zimbabwean football legend Willard Katsande has expressed his aspirations to coach the Amakhosi soon.
The 38-year-old, who retired from professional football in 2022, is currently part of the technical staff at Crystal Lake in South Africa’s SAB League.
Impressive Career Journey
Katsande’s football journey has been impressive. He made a significant impact during his debut season with Ajax Cape Town in 2011, which led to his move to Kaizer Chiefs the following year.
Over a decade at Naturena, Katsande played 310 games and helped the team secure two DStv Premiership titles. After leaving Kaizer Chiefs in 2021, he joined Sekhukhune United before retiring a year later.
Aspiring to Coach Amakhosi
In a recent interview on Robert Marawa’s Worldwide Sports Show, Katsande was asked about his coaching ambitions with Kaizer Chiefs. “Yes, very soon,” he responded confidently.
He explained that he is currently focused on completing his coaching qualifications and running his soccer school, which he sees as crucial preparation for his future coaching career.
Giving Back to Zimbabwe
Katsande also expressed a strong desire to contribute to his national team, Zimbabwe. “As soon as I’m done with my qualifications, I will coach Kaizer Chiefs and then go to my national team because I believe I need to give back,” he said. His commitment to both club and country underscores his dedication to the sport and his roots.
Coaching Timeline and Goals
When asked about the timeline for achieving his coaching ambitions, Katsande estimated it would take about four years. He emphasized his goal is not just to become a coach, but to lead Kaizer Chiefs to win trophies and the league.
“I’m going to try to change the game and the way people see Kaizer Chiefs,” he declared, showing his determination to make a significant impact.
Critical of Recent Club Performance
Katsande, known affectionately as ‘Salt & Pepper,’ has been vocal about his criticisms of Kaizer Chiefs’ recent performances.
The club has not won any silverware in nearly a decade and has just finished another trophyless season.
Katsande attributed part of the club’s struggles to the decision to part ways with coach Stuart Baxter in 2015, a move he believes was a mistake.
