Today, in honor of Presidents’ Day, many offices and businesses across the country are set to shut their doors.
Originally established to recognize George Washington’s birthday, this holiday falls on the third Monday of February annually.
While post offices and banks will observe the holiday, major retailers and national parks have varying operational plans. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect:
Banks and Stock Markets: A Day of Closure
Presidents’ Day is recognized as a banking and stock market holiday. As a result, major banks, including Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Truist, Citibank, and Capital One, will close their local branches.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will also suspend operations. Despite closures, ATMs and online services will continue to function.
Postal Services: No Deliveries, but FedEx Continues
The US Postal Service will observe the holiday, leading to the suspension of residential and business deliveries, and the closure of post offices.
UPS will not pick up or deliver packages, with some UPS store locations operating at reduced hours.
However, FedEx services will continue, including a ‘modified service’ for FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy.
Major Retailers: Open for Business
Major retailers such as Costco, Walmart, and Target have confirmed their stores will remain open as usual on Presidents’ Day.
In addition, many larger retailers, including Macy’s, Nordstrom, Best Buy, and Amazon, are enticing shoppers with special Presidents’ Day sales.
Restaurant Chains and National Parks: Operational Normalcy
All major restaurant chains, including McDonald’s, KFC, Applebee’s, Burger King, and Chick-fil-A, are expected to operate during their regular hours.
Meanwhile, all National Parks will offer free admission today, as Presidents’ Day is one of six days each year when park services open to the public at no charge.
Libraries, Museums, and Pharmacies: Varying Closures
Public libraries and noncritical government services, such as city offices and the Department of Motor Vehicles, will be closed.
However, most museums are anticipated to remain open for the holiday. Pharmacies, including CVS, Walgreens, and Rite Aid, will be open, although some may operate on modified hours.
