Wandile Duba Shares His Experience of Adapting to a New Role at Kaizer Chiefs as the Team Pursues Success in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership Season

Kaizer Chiefs’ rising star, Wandile Duba, has recently shared his thoughts on adapting to a new playing position under the guidance of coach Nasressine Nabi during the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.

This shift comes as a significant development for both Duba and the team, reflecting the changes and ambitions that Nabi brings to the club.

A Fresh Start for Kaizer Chiefs

The appointment of Nabi as head coach a few months ago marked a pivotal moment for the Kaizer Chiefs, a club that has been searching for glory after a nine-season trophy drought.

Nabi’s arrival, along with his technical team, has aimed to breathe new life into the club, sparking hope among fans and players alike.

With this fresh start, the team is focused on reclaiming its place at the top of South African football.

Duba’s Journey to the Senior Team

Wandile Duba’s journey to the senior team has been impressive.

After being promoted from the Chiefs’ development ranks by former coach Arthur Zwane during the 2022/23 season, Duba quickly made a name for himself with standout performances in the DStv Diski Challenge.

His hard work and dedication paid off, leading to his current role in the senior team.

Under Nabi’s mentorship, the 20-year-old forward has been making strides, participating in all three league matches so far this season and even contributing an assist.

This consistent play shows how Duba is becoming an integral part of the team as they navigate the league.

Adapting to a New Role

Traditionally, Duba plays as a striker, but under Nabi, he has taken on a new challenge: playing as a winger.

This change has come about as Ranga Chivaviro has stepped up as the primary striker for the Chiefs.

In a recent match against Mamelodi Sundowns, Duba found himself occasionally filling the role of a wingback, showcasing his versatility on the field.

Reflecting on this shift, Duba expressed his newfound confidence in playing as a winger.

“I discovered this season that I can actually perform well on the wing.

Coach Nabi prefers me there, possibly because of my speed and mentality,” he explained.

He emphasized his willingness to adapt, stating, “I don’t mind playing there as a winger. I’m a player who is ready to work hard.

Whatever position the coach assigns me, I’ll embrace it. My natural position is as a striker, but if Ranga is under pressure, the coach may switch things up and move me back up front.”

Embracing the Wingback Challenge

While Duba is eager to adapt to his new role, he acknowledges the challenges that come with playing as a wingback.

“It’s a tough position, I won’t lie,” he admitted. Duba highlighted the team’s strategy against Sundowns, recognizing the threat posed by their right-side attacks.

“We were aware that they [Sundowns] often attack down the right side, especially with Thapelo Morena, so I had the responsibility to manage him.”

As the season progresses, Duba’s adaptability and determination will be key for his continued development and for the success of the Kaizer Chiefs as they aim for a triumphant return to the top of the league.

With his talent and willingness to learn, there’s no doubt that Duba will play an essential role in the team’s journey this season.
