Al Ahly’s legendary defender, Wael Gomaa, has recently reignited his feud with Pitso Mosimane, criticizing the coach for allegedly using the club as a mere stepping stone for his career ambitions.
Gomaa, who was one of Mosimane’s fiercest critics during the South African coach’s tenure at Al Ahly from 2020 to 2022, has accused him of leveraging interest from Al Ahly’s rivals, Zamalek, to negotiate a better deal with the club.
In a recent interview with MBC Masr, Gomaa voiced his frustrations about Mosimane’s approach.
“I’m speaking based on the realities and incidents that occurred here,” Gomaa stated.
With some coaching experience of his own—having been part of Carlos Queiroz’s staff during Egypt’s 2021 AFCON campaign—Gomaa reflected on Mosimane’s time with the team.
Concerns Over Mosimane’s Tactics
Gomaa shared, “One of the things that troubled me was how he used Zamalek’s interest as leverage to get a better contract with Al Ahly.
Despite being praised as a good trainer, he frequently sought breaks for himself and the players, which wasn’t always beneficial.”
Despite Mosimane’s impressive achievements with Al Ahly, including two CAF Champions League titles, Gomaa remarked that the coach’s style didn’t sit well with some of the players.
Mosimane’s Legacy and Departure
Although Mosimane boasts a remarkable trophy haul—three Champions League titles, the Egypt Cup, CAF Super Cup, and Egyptian Premier League, plus a bronze medal at the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup—Gomaa believes Mosimane viewed his time at Al Ahly as just a stepping stone.
Since leaving Cairo, Mosimane has taken on new challenges, first with Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia, where he secured promotion from the second division, and later with Al Wahda in the UAE.
He is currently without a club following his recent stint with Abha Club.
