Vusumuzi Vilakazi, the former head coach of Richards Bay FC, has opened up about his unexpected departure from the club just before the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season.
Despite signing a new contract after successfully helping the club avoid relegation through the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs, Vilakazi and Richards Bay FC parted ways by mutual consent, as first reported by FARPost.
Vilakazi joined Richards Bay FC in November 2023, replacing Kaitano Tembo, who was let go due to poor results. He initially secured a contract extension to stay with the team for another season.
However, with the arrival of a new sponsor, Phakwe Gas, discussions emerged about bringing in a more experienced coach.
Thabiso Tenyane, CEO of Phakwe Gas, hinted at forthcoming changes in the coaching staff, paving the way for Brandon Truter to be named the new head coach.
Vilakazi’s Take on His Departure
Although Richards Bay FC has yet to officially announce Vilakazi’s departure, the coach has shared insights into the situation. Speaking on Metro FM, Vilakazi mentioned, “I’m no longer with Richards Bay.
I was expecting an official statement from the club, but they haven’t released one yet.” He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging the pressures and challenges he faced while helping the team survive relegation.
Contract Amendments and Performance Clauses
Vilakazi also shed light on the new clauses in his contract, which played a significant role in his exit. “We had signed a contract three or four weeks ago with the chairman, but recently, they asked me to sign an amended version with a performance clause,” he explained.
This clause required him to secure eight points from a series of games against top teams like Kaizer Chiefs, Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, Stellenbosch, and SuperSport United.
Vilakazi emphasized the importance of being realistic with such expectations.
Reflecting on His Tenure
Reflecting on his time with Richards Bay FC, Vilakazi expressed his appreciation for the experience, despite the challenges. “It was my first time being under pressure to help a team avoid relegation.
I believe I played my part, even if my impact was minimal. It’s an experience I will always cherish as a young coach,” he said.
