…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. Vice President Kashim Shettima has responded to President Bola Tinubu’s recent announcement regarding the removal of fuel subsidy.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari had previously attempted to remove the subsidy but suspended the plan shortly before the end of his tenure.
However, during his inaugural speech at the Eagles Square in Abuja on Monday, Tinubu declared an end to fuel subsidy.
In defense of President Tinubu’s decision, Vice President Shettima addressed journalists after assuming office at Aso Villa on Tuesday.
He expressed his belief that Nigeria would face long-term consequences if the current administration fails to eliminate fuel subsidy.
Shettima argued that removing the subsidy would ultimately benefit the masses, contrasting with the upper class who have been the main beneficiaries thus far.
Shettima stated, “The President has already made pronouncements yesterday on the issue of the fuel subsidy.
The truth of the matter is that it is either we get rid of the subsidy or the fuel subsidy gets rid of the Nigerian nation.”
He further highlighted that in 2022 alone, $10 billion was spent on subsidizing the extravagant lifestyles of the upper class, while the majority of Nigerians, especially the poor, derived minimal benefits.
Acknowledging the opposition that would arise from those who profit from the oil subsidy scam, Shettima emphasized President Tinubu’s determination and conviction.
He reassured the public that the president is resolute in his noble intentions for the nation and that the issue of fuel subsidy would be directly addressed.
Shettima concluded by urging for prompt action, stating, “The earlier we do so, the better.”
