Cape Town Spurs had a tough season after their long-awaited return to the DStv Premiership, the top flight of South African football, which they rejoined after a six-year absence.
Unfortunately, their return was brief.
The team struggled to find their footing and consistency throughout the season.
They went through multiple coaching changes, starting with Shaun Bartlett, a former Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs striker.
In November 2023, Ernst Middendorp, a former Chiefs coach, was brought in to turn things around.
Despite these efforts, the team faced relegation.
Michael Morton joined Cape Town Spurs in 2022 when they were still playing in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
He came to the team after leaving All Stars FC, which had disbanded before the 2022/23 season.
On Saturday, June 29, the 35-year-old veteran midfielder announced on social media that he had signed a one-year contract extension with Cape Town Spurs.
Morton, whose contract was set to expire on June 30, faced an uncertain future with the club.
He had previously shared with FARPost that negotiations for a new deal were underway, and a decision was imminent.
In his announcement, Morton reflected on his 19-year career, which began with his first professional contract with Orlando Pirates’ Vodacom team, Yebo Yes.
He expressed gratitude for the experiences and relationships he has built over the years, including playing alongside some of South Africa’s best footballers and being mentored by top coaches.
“I’ve shared the dressing room with some of South Africa’s best footballers,” Morton said.
“I’ve been mentored and guided by the country’s best coaches and played for some of the country’s iconic clubs.
I have experienced the immense pride of representing South Africa and wearing the national jersey.”
Embracing New Challenges
Morton also spoke about the highs and lows of his career, from lifting trophies and scoring goals to the devastation of relegation.
Despite these challenges, he expressed excitement about the future and his commitment to helping Cape Town Spurs return to the DStv Premiership.
“I’m happy to announce that I’ve signed a one-year contract with Cape Town Spurs,” he said.
“This is another attempt to put this club where it belongs, in the DStv Premiership.”
Looking Ahead
Michael Morton’s journey with Cape Town Spurs continues, and fans will be watching closely to see how he and the team perform in the upcoming season.
