Owen Da Gama, a veteran coach known for his extensive experience, is ready to make a comeback to the South African elite league after a hiatus.
Da Gama has been off the PSL scene for some time, leaving many to speculate about his future plans.
However, his recent interview with FARPost revealed that his passion for coaching remains strong.
His last coaching role was in May 2023 with Black Leopards, who were relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship after a tough season.
Da Gama has a rich history, having coached top PSL clubs like the now-defunct Platinum Stars, Orlando Pirates, Free State Stars, Bloemfontein Celtic, Highlands Park FC, TS Galaxy, and Sekhukhune United.
Beyond club coaching, Da Gama has also been involved with the national teams.
He served as an assistant coach and later as a caretaker coach for Bafana Bafana, and he also led the SA Under-23 National Team.
Time as an Analyst
During his break, the 62-year-old stayed connected to the sport by working as a football analyst for SABC Sport, sharing his deep insights during matches.
Future Plans
In a recent update, Da Gama expressed his readiness to return to coaching in the SA top-flight after his much-needed break.
He mentioned that he has been in contact with some PSL teams, although nothing is confirmed yet.
“It’s been very good being on the break; I took a bit of a sabbatical,” Da Gama told FARPost.
“But I’m really looking to get back to football [coaching].
I’ve been involved in football since January 2024, analyzing for SABC and covering AFCON, which I enjoyed a lot.
But I’m definitely looking to get back to the game as soon as possible.
I’ve enquired with one or two PSL teams, but there is nothing concrete yet.
Soon, it will be made public once a deal has been reached.”

Da Gama’s commitment and passion for the game are evident as he looks forward to his next coaching opportunity, staying hopeful for a swift return to the PSL.
