Usha Vance Steals the Spotlight in Milwaukee as She Introduces Her Husband J.D. Vance as Donald Trump’s Running Mate at the Republican National Convention

On Wednesday night, Usha Vance, wife of Ohio Senator J.D. Vance, made her primetime debut. She introduced her husband as Donald Trump’s running mate right before his speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, WI.

“It’s hard to believe we’re here,” Vance said with a touch of awe. “Neither J.D. nor I ever expected to be in this position, but it’s a powerful example of the American dream.”

She expressed her gratitude to everyone who supported them and then welcomed her husband to the stage.

The 38-year-old litigator, who graduated from Ivy League institutions, was by her husband’s side on the convention floor when he was officially nominated as the vice presidential candidate for the Republican 2024 ticket.

On Wednesday night, viewers worldwide saw her take the stage at the Fiserv Forum for her first public address since his nomination.

Starting off with a light-hearted joke, she referenced the Ron Howard movie based on her husband’s memoir, *Hillbilly Elegy*.

“When I was asked to introduce my husband, I wasn’t sure what to say,” she laughed. “What more could be said about a man who’s already had a movie made about him?”

A Personal Touch

Dressed in a striking deep blue dress, Usha described her husband as the most interesting person she knows.

She shared anecdotes about how he overcame childhood challenges and how much he enjoys spending time with puppies.

She also mentioned how he adapted to her vegetarian diet and even learned to cook for her mother, becoming a cherished member of her family.

As J.D. Vance steps into the spotlight, potentially becoming the Second Lady if Republicans win in November, Usha has yet to reveal what her focus would be in that role.

However, she’s an accomplished individual in her own right.

A Glimpse Into Their Lives

Usha Vance met J.D. while they were both studying at Yale Law School in 2013.

They married a year after graduating in 2014. Their family grew with the birth of their first child, Ewan Blaine, in 2017, followed by their second son Vivek, and their daughter Mirabel, born in December 2021.

When asked if she was prepared for the intense scrutiny that could come with being the Second Lady, Usha admitted she wasn’t sure anyone could ever be ready for that level of attention.

She reflected on their first campaign experience as a surprising adventure and mentioned that while they weren’t looking to make drastic changes, she deeply believes in her husband and is ready to see where their journey leads.

Her Background and Career

Born Usha Chilukuri to Indian immigrants, Vance was raised in the suburbs of San Diego in a religious Hindu family.

She moved across the country for her education, attending Yale University for history and then studying at the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar.

At Yale Law School, she was an editor for the Yale Law Journal and the managing editor for the Yale Journal of Law & Technology.

Before stepping away from her legal career, she worked at Munger, Tolles & Olson in San Francisco and Washington, DC, focusing on complex civil litigation and appeals.

She had previously clerked for Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, and Judge Amul Thapar.

Throughout her husband’s Senate campaign, Usha was actively involved and appeared in his campaign ads, speaking about his upbringing and their life together.

She’s described him as an exceptional father and her best friend.

When asked last month what issues she might focus on as Second Lady, Usha chose not to specify, leaving her future role open to interpretation.
