In a recent twist, the University of Alabama has decided to challenge LIV Golf’s ‘4 Aces’ team over a trademark dispute.
The crux of the issue? Alabama claims the ‘4 Aces’ logo too closely resembles their own.
Sports law attorney John Nucci shed some light on the situation, explaining that the university argues the ‘4 Aces’ design contains the same literal elements as Alabama’s logo.
The style of the lettering is also under scrutiny, with the filing stating it creates a similar commercial impression to that of the Alabama design.
As of now, neither LIV Golf nor the University of Alabama have responded to requests for comments on the matter.
This leaves room for speculation on how this legal battle might unfold.
Meet the ‘4 Aces’ Team
The ‘4 Aces’ team isn’t just any golf squad.
Led by captain Dustin Johnson, it features prominent players like Pat Perez, Patrick Reed, and Harold Varner III.
Despite their prowess on the green, they now face a different kind of challenge off the course.
Not LIV Golf’s First Rodeo
This isn’t the first time LIV Golf has faced trademark issues.
Last year, the Argentine company Cool Brands Supply, which owns the rights to Fallen Footwear, sued Phil Mickelson’s HyFlyers GC.
The company claimed the HyFlyers logo was nearly identical to their 20-year-old trademarked design.
In response, Mickelson’s team updated their logo in December 2023 to prominently feature the letter ‘H’, moving away from the old mirrored ‘F’s design.
Adidas Joins the Fray
Adding to LIV Golf’s legal woes, German sports brand Adidas filed a lawsuit against them in September 2023.
Adidas alleged that LIV Golf’s logo incorporated three stripes in a way that was confusingly similar to their own well-known trademark.
This case, along with the others, paints a picture of ongoing trademark challenges for the burgeoning golf circuit.
