Two Men Face Justice as Sentences Handed Down for Their Roles in the Murder of Restaurant Co-Owner Ben Tuzee in a Hijacking in Philippi

In a heartbreaking turn of events, two men have recently received their sentences for the tragic murder of Ben Tuzee, a well-known co-owner of Dixies Restaurant & Bar located in Glencairn.

This case has captivated the local community and left many grieving over the loss of a beloved figure.

Details of the Incident

Ben Tuzee, aged 51 at the time of his death, was brutally stabbed during a hijacking that took place on September 6, 2022.

The incident occurred in Browns Farm, Philippi, while Tuzee was assisting his niece, 33-year-old Kaele Lombard, in delivering a television she had sold via Facebook Marketplace.

Unfortunately, the situation escalated into violence when the assailants attacked.

During the altercation, Lombard’s car, a Toyota Tazz, was stolen, and she suffered multiple injuries from being struck with a rock.

Local residents rushed to help Tuzee, transporting him to a nearby clinic for medical attention.

Sadly, despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries within an hour.

Arrest and Legal Proceedings

The investigation led to the arrest of three suspects just a week after the murder, thanks to the diligent work of Nyanga police officers.

Following their initial court appearances, the suspects entered plea agreements with the State.

In the Wynberg Regional Court, two of them were sentenced to serve time in prison.

Sentencing Outcomes

Among those sentenced was Zolile Nkombisa, who was 23 at the time of his arrest.

He received a 15-year sentence for aggravated robbery.

Meanwhile, Ndiphelele Mtunaye, who was only 18 when arrested, was sentenced to 25 years for murder and an additional 15 years for aggravated robbery, with both sentences set to run concurrently.

A Minor’s Involvement

Adding a complex layer to the case, Advocate Hansie Linde, representing the Lombard family, revealed that the first accused, a minor at the time of his arrest, agreed to turn State witness.

This decision allowed him to avoid punishment for his role in the crime, a move that has raised questions and stirred emotions within the community.

Looking Ahead

As the legal proceedings conclude, the community continues to mourn the loss of Ben Tuzee.

His legacy as a cherished member of Glencairn remains alive in the hearts of those who knew him, while the case serves as a reminder of the challenges surrounding crime and justice in society.
