Tshwane search teams have found the body of a woman near the Olifantspruit near Irene this morning, taking the death toll to five.
According to Tshwane Emergency Services spokesperson Charles Mabaso, it is believed that the woman was one of the two passengers on an e-hailing vehicle.
The vehicle was reportedly washed away on Saturday morning with the search being called off on Monday night due to safety concerns.
Mabaso told The South African that an extensive search was conducted over the past few days and arrived in Irene yesterday, focusing around the borders of Tshwane where the woman was found.
As it stands, the number of fatalities recorded stood at five following heavy rainfall in the province at the weekend. The massive rainfall resulted in damaged infrastructure.
Mabaso said the search saw the recovery of a man on Monday afternoon from a bakkie that was washed away in Centurion.
He also confirmed reports that the body of a man, who allegedly drowned in his shack at Soul City informal settlement in Mamelodi, was recovered by the SAPS and Pathology Services.
“The SAPS dive team at around midday on Monday also discovered and recovered the body of a man from his Audi SUV that was washed away and stuck near Centurion Lake Hotel,” said Mabaso.
Mabaso said the search for a man who was in his boat with a friend that was washed over the dam wall in the Roodeplaat dam was resumed yesterday after being called off on Sunday afternoon.
“Search teams discovered the body on Monday afternoon, downstream from the Roodeplaat Dam, near the SAPS K9 Unit and Moloto road.”
MMC for Human Settlements Abel Tau said other heavily affected communities in Tshwane included Eerste Fabrieke, Gomora, Nellmapius, and Sebothoma.
