Sven-Goran Eriksson’s family has shared the details of the former England manager’s upcoming funeral.
The football world has been paying tribute to Eriksson since he passed away on August 26 after a lengthy struggle with pancreatic cancer.
Throughout the weekend, numerous football clubs across the country have offered their respects.
A Difficult Farewell
In January, Eriksson had shared that he was given “best case a year” to live after his diagnosis.
He was surrounded by his loved ones when he passed away just over a week ago.
Now, preparations are in place for a final farewell to the man who made history as the first foreign manager of the England national team in 2001, leading them in 67 matches until 2006.
Details of the Service
According to Henry Winter, the details of the funeral have been made public.
The service will be held next Friday, September 13, in Fryksande Church in Torsby, Sweden, starting at 10 am local time.
Following the service, there will be a procession to Kollsbergs hembygdsgard, a rural community museum, where attendees will hear speeches and eulogies.
Dress Code and Arrangements
The family has also specified that attendees should wear formal, dark suits, and that no bags or photography will be allowed inside the church.
Given the annual market in Torsby, parking will be limited, and guests are advised to arrive early.
The doors will close promptly at 10 am, and seating will be limited.
Tributes and Reflections
Known affectionately as ‘Svennis’ in Sweden, Eriksson led a “golden generation” of English players including David Beckham, Paul Scholes, and Steven Gerrard.
His children, Lina and Johan, have praised him for his brave fight against illness and noted that he passed away peacefully at his home in Bjorkefors.
Prince William described Eriksson as a “true gentleman of the game,” while Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer lauded his significant contribution to English football.
Eriksson’s 95-year-old father, also named Sven, expressed mixed feelings about the funeral, noting the bittersweet nature of the event as a testament to his son’s popularity.
A Legacy of Love and Laughter
Eriksson’s tenure was marked not only by his professional achievements but also by his personal life, including high-profile relationships during his time as England’s coach.
Beyond football, he managed several clubs across Sweden, Portugal, and Italy, securing major trophies in the 1980s and 90s.
David Beckham shared a poignant tribute on social media, featuring a silent video of the two walking, talking, and laughing together.
Beckham’s post highlighted their special bond, expressing gratitude for Eriksson’s role in making him captain and cherishing their final moments together.
As we reflect on Eriksson’s life, we remember not just his accomplishments but the warmth and kindness he brought to those around him.
