Aras Rudzianskas, a 13-year-old boy, from Newcastle has tragically passed away after encountering difficulties in the River Tyne.
Northumbria Police confirmed his death in hospital on Tuesday. This follows the death of 14-year-old David Radut, also from Newcastle, who died at the scene near the bridge at Ovingham on Saturday.
Attempted Rescue and Devastating Loss
A group of friends were reportedly playing on a rope swing over the river when the two teenagers fell into the water.
It is believed that David tried to rescue Aras, who was struggling in the River Tyne.
Heartbroken friends have since paid tribute to Aras on social media. One grieving friend posted, “Aras, why did you have to leave so soon?
I love you so much and hope you are watching over us. Forever 13. You still had so many years ahead. I can’t stop breaking down just looking at your picture. You will forever be loved and missed.”
Community Tributes and Remembrance
Another friend wrote, “Howay lads, let’s give a big send-off for my kid with lots of bikes, fireworks—the lot. Aras, hope we’re making you proud, brother. This is your day.”
Friends have also expressed their sorrow for David Radut. Millie Weatherson commented on Facebook, “Rest easy David Radut until we meet again. Don’t take my shoes off and call me little legs, haha. Forever a big miss.”
Immediate Response and Aftermath
The tragic events on Saturday afternoon led someone to cut down the tree that the rope swing was attached to. Northumberland County Council has confirmed it was not responsible for this action.
Chief Superintendent Sam Rennison of Northumbria Police stated, “Our sincerest sympathies go to the loved ones of both boys, and we will continue to provide support during this devastating time. Since Saturday, our thoughts and those of the wider community have been with the families and friends of those affected. We ask the public to respect the families’ privacy both online and in the community.”
Police and Emergency Services’ Actions
A spokesperson for Northumbria Police explained, “Shortly after 3:30 pm on Saturday, police received a report of concern for the welfare of two teenage boys in the river near the bridge at Ovingham. Emergency and rescue services were immediately dispatched. Sadly, 14-year-old David Radut passed away at the scene. The second boy, 13-year-old Aras Rudzianskas, was taken to the hospital. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he tragically passed away on Tuesday.”
