In a striking introduction as the new Scottish Tory leader, Russell Findlay made waves during his debut at Holyrood, targeting the SNP’s social care strategy, which he labeled as deeply flawed.
With a passionate speech, Findlay called on Deputy First Minister John Swinney to reevaluate the stalled National Care Service (NCS) initiative and shift the focus from bureaucratic plans to immediate support for frontline services.
Criticism of the National Care Service
Findlay argued that the funds earmarked for the NCS, a project launched in 2021 by former First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, should be redirected.
He pointed out that the original goal of this ambitious project—to provide uniform high standards of community health and social care across Scotland—has faced significant setbacks.
Costs have skyrocketed, and there has been considerable pushback from local councils and unions against the centralization of services.
Just last week, the council body Cosla dealt a significant blow to the NCS by withdrawing its support, leaving the government in a difficult position.
Despite unions refusing to collaborate, the government remains steadfast in its assertion that the service will commence by 2029.
Wasted Resources and Ongoing Issues
Mr. Findlay highlighted that £28 million had already been squandered in developing NCS plans.
He emphasized that multiple parliamentary committees have raised serious concerns about its viability.
“Why is the First Minister pushing ahead with a plan that no one seems to want?” he questioned, pointing to the current crisis in social care where thousands are stuck in hospitals due to a lack of adequate support.
He also noted that one in five care homes has shut down over the past decade, leading to an alarming situation where nearly 2,000 patients are unable to leave hospitals.
“Scotland’s care sector is collapsing today. People need action today,” he insisted, urging the government to reallocate funds toward immediate care needs rather than pursuing what he termed as yet another failed SNP initiative.
Swinney Defends the Government’s Approach
In response, Mr. Swinney maintained that the National Care Service is essential for ensuring high-quality support for everyone receiving social care.
He acknowledged the pressing issue of bed-blocking, revealing that the rate in the worst-performing council was ten times higher than in the best.
Yet, Findlay countered that the statistics prove the government’s current strategy is not addressing immediate needs.
“It is classic SNP—wasting time and money while neglecting what people truly need,” he stated.
He criticized the government for taking power away from local communities, which he believes encapsulates the flaws in Scottish politics.
Call for a More Effective Solution
Drawing parallels to other government failures, Findlay likened the National Care Service plans to ineffective projects like ferries that don’t operate and prisons that release criminals early.
He urged for a fundamental rethink: “Surely it is basic common sense to ditch the SNP’s national care service plan and directly invest the money into frontline care.”
In the midst of the debate, Swinney pointed to a 25% increase in social care spending, attributing the ongoing issues to rising demand.
Meanwhile, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar echoed Findlay’s sentiments, condemning the NCS as an “absolute disaster” and calling for a practical alternative to address the NHS crisis.
