During the emotional farewell to former Finance Minister and South Africa’s first black Reserve Bank Governor, Tito Mboweni, his sons took center stage to honor their father.
On Saturday, October 19, the Mboweni family gathered in Tzaneen, Limpopo, to bid their final goodbyes, and his sons delivered touching eulogies that captured the essence of his life.
A Legacy Beyond Politics
While Tito Mboweni was widely known for his political opinions, love for cooking, and travel adventures, which he frequently shared on his popular X (formerly Twitter) account, his personal life remained relatively private.
Much of his family story wasn’t well known until now.
Reports suggest that Mboweni was married to a woman during his time in exile in Lesotho, but the couple eventually went their separate ways.
Despite their separation, he maintained close bonds with his children.
Sello’s Tribute to His Father
Sello, one of Tito Mboweni’s sons, shared an emotional speech about his father.
He mentioned how he, along with his brothers Pule and Tumelo, had different mothers but were united by their father’s love.
“He gave so much love to his family, his brothers, myself and my mother, and Pule and Tumelo’s mother,” Sello said.
He emphasized how Mboweni’s spirit would continue to live on through the memories, laughter, and life lessons he left behind.
Sello is a model and music artist, according to his Instagram, while his brothers also have their own careers—Pule as a Food and Beverage Manager at a leading hotel in Johannesburg, and Tumelo as a research assistant.
A Rumored Fourth Son
Adding a twist to the family narrative, reality TV star and influencer Lerato “Habibi” Makgatho claimed to have had a child with Tito Mboweni.
She revealed that she was in a relationship with the former Reserve Bank Governor from 2016 to 2019 and that the two decided to keep their son out of the public eye.
Lerato described Mboweni as a loving man, saying, “I am the one who messed up. His sudden death really hurt me.”
She attended his funeral, affirming that their son would be well taken care of and that they would handle any future decisions together.
What Comes Next?
As Tito Mboweni’s family processes their loss, the legacy of his work in public service and his close relationships with his loved ones continue to be honored.
Whether through public tributes or private memories, his impact will be felt for years to come.
