PDP Chieftain Segun Sowunmi Issues Cautionary Words to President Tinubu
Segun Sowunmi, a prominent member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and one of the party’s governorship aspirants for the 2023 elections, has delivered a warning to President Bola Tinubu.
Sowunmi, in an interview with The Punch, stressed the importance of Tinubu remembering his grassroots struggles and ensuring that his policies do not exacerbate the challenges faced by the Nigerian people.
Tinubu Urged to Address Hunger Concerns
Expressing concern over reports of hunger in the South-West, Sowunmi urged President Tinubu to confront the prevailing issues directly.
He questioned how people in rural parts of the country would survive if those in the more prosperous South-Western region were already complaining about hunger.
Critique of Tinubu’s Taxation System
Sowunmi did not mince words in criticizing Tinubu’s tax system. While acknowledging the effort to establish a unitary tax system and eliminate multiple taxation, he expressed surprise at Tinubu’s approach.
Sowunmi specifically questioned the perceived reliance on currency devaluation as a solution, asserting that such policies only make life more difficult for the populace.
Concerns Over Neo-Liberal Policies
Highlighting the impact of policy failures on the citizens, Sowunmi emphasized that the burden should not be placed on the people.
He criticized what he referred to as President Tinubu’s “neo-liberal policies,” stating that they are off-tangent and contribute to increasing poverty levels.
Call for Dialogue and Critical Review
Sowunmi concluded by calling for open conversations on the economic challenges facing the nation.
He urged a critical examination of the policies in place and emphasized the need for solutions that are people-centric, advocating for a reconsideration of taxation approaches and measures to alleviate the economic hardships experienced by Nigerians.
