…By Babatunde Lucas for TDPel Media. Aloy Ejimakor, a special counsel to the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has made a plea to President Bola Tinubu to correct the past wrongs committed by former President Muhammadu Buhari by releasing Kanu.
Taking to Twitter, Ejimakor highlighted that the constitution grants the president the power to intervene and halt any criminal trial, urging President Tinubu not to wait for the Supreme Court to take action.
Ejimakor emphasized that the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), in practice meaning the President, holds the authority to halt any ongoing criminal trial.
He urged President Tinubu not to delay in undoing the serious injustice of Kanu’s rendition that was carried out by his predecessor, and instead release Nnamdi Kanu.
Nnamdi Kanu has been in custody since his arrest and extradition from Kenya two years ago.
His arrest was made on the grounds of advocating for the actualization of Biafra.
Despite court orders calling for his release, the Nigerian government has continued to detain him, leading to mounting calls for his freedom.
The appeal from Aloy Ejimakor highlights the hope that President Tinubu, if given the opportunity, will take steps to rectify the situation and address the grievances surrounding Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention.
The power vested in the president under the constitution allows for the intervention in criminal trials, and it is expected that President Tinubu will consider this plea to uphold justice and fairness in Kanu’s case.
