Angelique Tong, a 26-year-old teacher from South Africa, has been found dead in Cambodia.
Originally hailing from Johannesburg, Angelique had recently embarked on a teaching journey at the IQ International School in Siem Reap.
Her disappearance last month raised concerns among friends and family, leading to a frantic search for her whereabouts.
A New Relationship
Reports from Khmer Times indicate that Angelique was discovered at the apartment of her British boyfriend, known as “Jack,” in the Sen Sok district of Phnom Penh Thmey.
The couple had only been dating for about a week before this tragic incident unfolded.
Friends shared that Angelique was last seen enjoying a dinner date at Harry’s Bistro along the picturesque Phnom Penh Riverside.
Later that evening, they visited the Hometown Hangout bar on Street 454 before heading back to the apartment complex.
Unfortunate Circumstances
During their time at the apartment complex, Angelique began to feel unwell after a swim in the pool.
According to police reports, Jack took her to his room so she could rest. Tragically, he found her unresponsive shortly thereafter and immediately called for help.
Colonel Sam Vichhika, a spokesperson for the Phnom Penh municipal police, stated that an autopsy determined Angelique’s cause of death was a combination of a heart attack and drug use.
Fortunately, authorities do not suspect Jack of any wrongdoing related to her passing.
A Community in Mourning
Concern for Angelique grew when she failed to show up for work on October 7.
Friends and family took to social media to raise alarms about her disappearance.
A friend later confirmed the grim news, describing her death as a “swimming pool-related incident.”
The post shared heartfelt condolences, stating, “Sadly, we have located Angel’s body. She passed away on September 29, 2024.
The family has been informed, and formal identification will take place this morning. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”
As arrangements are made for her family to claim her remains, Angelique’s body has been temporarily placed at Stung Meanchey Pagoda in the Meanchey district.
This tragic incident has left a community in mourning, as they remember a bright young teacher whose life was cut short far too soon.
