…By Roland Peterson for TDPel Media. With the youth now facing new challenges, government interventions targeted at helping young people are making a difference in the lives of many.
South Africa’s youth has a history of driving change, exemplified by the events of June 16, 1976.
Despite the uncertainties of the present, today’s youth continue to carry on this legacy.
To address the challenges they face, the government has implemented various programs and strategies to empower the youth, including economic opportunities, bursaries, internships, and learnerships.
Building a Successful Business: Tumi Mdluli’s Story
One beneficiary of these opportunities is Tumi Mdluli, a 35-year-old entrepreneur who has successfully built her own business.
With the support of the Small Enterprise Finance Agency (Sefa), Mdluli established a Shell and Spar Express filling station in Golden Meadows along Johannesburg’s Witkoppen Road.
She employs 45 young people, recognizing the need to provide employment and upskill the youth in the face of high unemployment rates.
Seizing Opportunities and Overcoming Challenges
After years of working as a business partner in her sister’s magazine publishing company and fuel station franchise, Mdluli decided to venture out on her own.
She approached Shell and Sefa, securing a franchise site and funding for her business.
Sefa was particularly supportive of her ambitions, appreciating her entry into the fuel industry as a young black female.
Mdluli’s grant of R7.9 million, with R1.5 million as a grant and the rest as a loan, propelled her business forward.
Encouraging Others and Celebrating the Youth
Mdluli encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to pursue education, possess inquiring minds, and take advantage of government opportunities.
She pays tribute to the youth of 1976, acknowledging their significant role in South Africa’s liberation struggle.
In honor of their contribution, National Youth Day on June 16 and Youth Month in June were established by the democratic government in 1994.
Mdluli sees these occasions as celebrations of a powerful journey that compels young people to be curious, learn, and reshape their mindset towards economic empowerment.
Investing in Education and Personal Development
Mdluli’s success can be attributed in part to her investment in education.
She holds a National Diploma in Law from the Tshwane University of Technology, a Programme for Management Development (PMD) certificate from the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and a certificate in accounting and production management.
Currently, she is pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce in Retail Management degree, further expanding her knowledge and skills.
Conclusion:
Government interventions aimed at empowering South African youth have proven effective in the face of new challenges.
Tumi Mdluli’s journey exemplifies the positive impact of these initiatives.
With her own business and a commitment to youth empowerment, she serves as an inspiration for others to seize opportunities, pursue education, and contribute to the country’s economic development.
