Deputy Health Minister Joe Phaahla recently highlighted the health risks associated with tobacco use in an interview with ENCA.
“Tobacco is undeniably harmful to health,” Phaahla said, noting its detrimental effects on the lungs, heart, and other organs.
He emphasized that the government’s goal is to safeguard public health and educate citizens about these risks.
“We aim to prevent people, particularly young individuals, from starting to smoke,” he added, underscoring the need to protect people from harmful substances, including second-hand smoke.
The bill seeks to replace outdated laws with more robust regulations to address modern tobacco products and their associated health risks.
Industry Pushback
Despite the well-intentioned health objectives of the bill, there is significant opposition from the business and labor sectors.
Critics argue that the new restrictions could adversely affect the tobacco industry, including farmers and retailers.
They believe the proposed fines and potential imprisonment are too harsh.
On the other hand, health advocates support the changes, arguing that the long-term health benefits far outweigh the economic impact.
