In a shocking turn of events in South Africa, a farmer is accused of deliberately running over a six-year-old boy, causing severe injuries, including two broken legs.
The alleged incident occurred when Christoffel Johannes Stoman, a 70-year-old farmer, confronted young Kwezi Beukes over an orange that Kwezi reportedly picked up from his property.
The incident unfolded on September 20 as Kwezi walked with his mother, Magdalene Jantijies, heading to town for groceries.
The Allegations and Arrest
Stoman has been charged with two counts of attempted murder and reckless driving after the boy was struck by his vehicle, which was towing a trailer.
Eyewitnesses report that Stoman allegedly aimed his vehicle directly at Kwezi and his mother, resulting in Kwezi being pinned against a fence.
After the accident, Stoman reportedly displayed no remorse, even telling the police he would do it again.
Following the incident, Kwezi was rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to Paarl Hospital for further treatment.
A Mother’s Heartbreak
Magdalene recounted the terrifying moment, describing how she and her son had walked past Stoman’s smallholding when Kwezi stopped to pick up an orange from the ground.
As Kwezi reached through the fence to grab another orange, Stoman suddenly accelerated towards them.
Magdalene said, “He shouted, ‘Stand there, stand there!’ I thought he was going to stop, but he aimed directly at us.” Her harrowing cries for help echoed in the aftermath of the tragedy.
Community Outrage
The incident has sparked outrage in the local community, with many residents stepping forward to express their concerns about Stoman’s behavior.
This isn’t the first time locals claim Stoman has acted aggressively, prompting calls for tougher penalties against farmers involved in such violent acts.
Billy Claasen from the Rural and Farmworkers Development Organisation has been vocal in advocating for justice, urging lawmakers to impose stricter consequences.
Legal Proceedings
The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has stated that they oppose Stoman’s release on bail, indicating that he will remain in custody until his next court appearance.
NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila confirmed, “The State has indicated that it will oppose bail in this case. We welcome this development.”
A visit to the crime scene revealed that Kwezi could not have accessed the orchard over the fence, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Looking Ahead
As Kwezi continues to receive medical treatment and prepare for surgery, his mother emphasizes the importance of focusing on their recovery.
Magdalene plans to seek counseling to help cope with the trauma they both endured.
“I aim to continue with this case. I want to proceed by the grace of God, as long as I can stand here,” she stated, highlighting her determination to seek justice for her son.
The community watches closely as this tragic case unfolds, hoping for accountability and change.
