Mamelodi Sundowns stands out as a formidable contender for the CAF Champions League this season.
Former Kaizer Chiefs development coach Farouk Khan has shared his insights on why he believes Sundowns has all the right ingredients to clinch the title.
Despite a history of past disappointments in the tournament, the team is ready to make a strong comeback.
A Strong Group but a Dominant Team
This season, Sundowns finds themselves in a challenging Group B alongside Raja Casablanca, AS FAR Rabat, and AS Maniema Union.
Khan, however, is confident in Sundowns’ abilities.
“Without a doubt, Sundowns have the quality none of these three teams possess,” he stated in an interview with KickOff.
He emphasized that Sundowns is the most robust team in their group, capable of overcoming any obstacles that may come their way.
Consistency is Key
Khan acknowledged that Sundowns has had a mixed start to the season, saying, “They haven’t been convincing.”
Yet, he believes the team’s talent is undeniable.
“Pound for pound, Sundowns have a very formidable squad. I think with the players they have, they shouldn’t have a problem going all the way and winning this time around.”
Praise for Sundowns’ Depth
As the director of the Stars of Africa Academy, Khan knows a thing or two about talent and development.
He remarked, “They always have quality and depth.”
Despite some early-season sluggishness, Sundowns seems to be finding their stride under head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, especially after parting ways with Rulani Mokwena in July.
Years of Preparation
Khan pointed out that Sundowns has been preparing for this moment since they last won the Champions League with Pitso Mosimane.
“They’ve had ample time to strengthen the team,” he noted.
With standout players like Ronwen Williams, who he called the best goalkeeper in Africa, and stars like Teboho Mokoena and Khuliso Mudau, Khan believes they have an exceptional lineup.
“You can’t ask for more,” he added.
An Unmatched Team on Their Day
Khan concluded his praise by stating, “I don’t think any team can give Sundowns a problem on their day.”
He referenced a past match where Sundowns stunned everyone by defeating Al Ahly 5-0 when the odds were against them.
This kind of performance reinforces Khan’s belief that Mamelodi Sundowns is a team to watch in this year’s CAF Champions League.
