In the midst of coaching changes and club shake-ups, Magesi FC chairman Solly Makhubela has stepped forward to address the swirling rumors about head coach Clinton Larsen potentially joining AmaZulu FC.
This speculation arises as AmaZulu actively seeks a new leader to replace Pablo Franco Martin, who recently parted ways with the club following a string of disappointing performances.
The Downfall of Pablo Franco Martin
Pablo Franco Martin’s tenure ended on a low note, as his squad found themselves at the bottom of the DStv Premiership table.
The team struggled with a rough start to the season, suffering three consecutive defeats.
They began with a 2-1 loss to Polokwane City FC and followed it up with a heavy 3-1 defeat against Kaizer Chiefs at their home ground, Moses Mabhida Stadium.
The final blow came with a 1-0 loss to Marumo Gallants, sealing Martin’s fate.
During his 39 matches in charge, Martin managed only 12 wins, 12 draws, and 15 losses.
The club also decided to part ways with Martin’s assistant, Aitor Van Den Brule.
Makhubela’s Take on AmaZulu’s Interest
Despite the buzz surrounding Larsen and his potential move to AmaZulu, Makhubela has made it clear that Larsen is still under contract with Magesi.
He stated that there has been no official approach from AmaZulu regarding the coach’s services.
“I don’t know anything about AmaZulu’s interest in Clinton Larsen,” Makhubela told FARPost.
“I haven’t received any communication from them.
The coach is still contracted to us for two years.
If they want him, they would have to terminate his contract.”
This assertion complicates AmaZulu’s plans, as they have reportedly viewed Larsen as their top target for the coaching position.
The New Assistant Coach and Future Prospects
In the meantime, AmaZulu has appointed Vusumuzi Vilakazi as their new assistant coach, which has sparked speculation that he might serve as a temporary solution while the club navigates the complexities of securing Larsen.
Vilakazi is no stranger to the topflight, having recently parted ways with Richards Bay FC after successfully leading them through the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs.
Known for his tactical knowledge and skill in developing young talent, he brings a wealth of experience from his previous roles as head coach for both Lamontville Golden Arrows and Richards Bay FC.
The Clock is Ticking
However, with Makhubela’s firm stance on Larsen’s contract, AmaZulu finds itself in a tricky situation.
With the Carling Knockout Cup approaching next weekend, the club faces a race against time to finalize their coaching setup.
Will they engage in negotiations with Magesi to secure Larsen’s release, or will they have to rely on Vilakazi as the interim head coach?
The next steps for AmaZulu remain uncertain, but the pressure is on to make a swift decision.
