In a heartbreaking turn of events, a six-year-old boy was taken off life support after a horrific act of violence.
Jathan Escobar, who had been brutally beaten by his stepfather, Abdulrahim Sulaiman, with a baseball bat, succumbed to his injuries, leaving his family and community devastated.
Details of the Attack
The brutal attack occurred on September 23 in Bridgeport, Connecticut, when Sulaiman, 33, allegedly assaulted his two young stepsons and his wife.
Tragically, Jathan was left brain dead as a result of the violence.
On October 2, the family shared the heartbreaking news on their GoFundMe campaign, announcing Jathan’s passing.
In a poignant tribute, a family member expressed their sorrow, saying, “Today, my sweet 6-year-old nephew made his final journey as he gives the ultimate gift of life through organ donation.
After suffering unimaginable pain and losing his life due to a brutal and senseless act, he leaves behind a legacy of hope for others.”
The family honored Jathan’s spirit, emphasizing that although they are shattered, his strength and the gift of life he provided to others will shine on.
Call for Help
During the attack, Jathan’s mother, 33, managed to call the police around 10 a.m., desperately pleading for assistance.
The chaos escalated when Sulaiman was caught on surveillance video leaping out of an upper window, landing headfirst into a dumpster.
When officers arrived, they found him with blood on his hands and arms, muttering to himself.
The scene inside the home was nothing short of horrific; police discovered Jathan’s mother bleeding from a head injury and holding her son.
While administering CPR to Jathan, officers could see brain matter, indicating the severity of his injuries.
Jathan, alongside his mother and four-year-old brother—who is now in stable condition—was airlifted to a medical facility.
Legal Consequences
As the investigation unfolded, the Bridgeport Police Department announced that Sulaiman’s charges have been upgraded to include murder with special circumstances.
Initially charged with multiple counts of attempted murder and assault, he was also found with a .22 caliber handgun in the home, which raised further concerns about the family’s safety.
Reports indicate that Sulaiman had been under the influence of “angel dust” during the attack.
Alarmingly, just days before the incident, a judge had issued an order of protection against him, barring him from contacting his wife and children due to months of harassment and threats.
Court Appearance and Current Status
In a court appearance on September 27, Sulaiman displayed disruptive behavior and had to be forcibly removed by court marshals, despite attempts to keep him calm with a gauze spit bag.
The judge set his bond at an astounding $10 million, and he has been ordered to wear an ankle monitor due to his violent history and prior threats against neighbors.
As the community mourns this tragic loss, many are left wondering what justice will look like for Jathan and his family moving forward.
