…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has issued a threat to initiate legal proceedings against President Bola Tinubu.
On Wednesday, the organization announced its intention to take Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima to court over the alleged 114 percent increase in their salaries.
Approval of Salary Increment by RMAFC
According to reports, the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) purportedly approved a significant salary increment for elected politicians, including the President, Vice President, governors, lawmakers, and other public office holders.
The RMAFC is responsible for determining appropriate remuneration for political officeholders as mandated by the constitution.
SERAP’s Criticism of Salary Increments
SERAP expressed its strong disapproval of the salary increments awarded to state governors and lawmakers, deeming them as outrageous.
The organization highlighted the stark contrast between such substantial salary raises for politicians and the dire living conditions faced by over 133 million Nigerians living in extreme poverty.
SERAP’s Announcement on Twitter
Taking to Twitter, SERAP confirmed its intentions to take legal action against the Tinubu administration.
The organization condemned the “outrageous and illegal” salary increment of 114 percent for the President, Vice President, state governors, and lawmakers, given the prevailing poverty rate in the country.
SERAP’s tweet read: “BREAKING: We’re suing the Tinubu administration over its outrageous and illegal 114 per cent increase in the salaries of the President, vice president, state governors and lawmakers, while over 133 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty.”
