In a heartbreaking turn of events, a mother and her eight-year-old daughter have been found dead at their home, sparking an investigation into a potential murder-suicide.
This devastating news came to light after emergency services responded to concerns for their welfare at a residence on South Radford Street, Salford, around 10:30 AM yesterday.
Details of the Incident
The victims, who are yet to be formally identified by Greater Manchester Police (GMP), were reported to be a 40-year-old mother and her disabled daughter.
A neighbor shared that the pair lived alone in the house, highlighting the mother’s loving and devoted nature.
It’s understood that the police are not searching for any other individuals in connection with this case, focusing instead on the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
The neighbor revealed that the mother’s name was Martina, and her daughter was named Elani.
She described Martina as being of mixed Polish and Italian heritage and noted that they had lived in the home for about two years.
Although the mother didn’t have a job, she dedicated her time to caring for her daughter.
A Caring Mother
The neighbor, who chose to remain anonymous, remembered seeing Martina occasionally, especially when she was out taking care of household tasks.
“I didn’t see her much; I was at work all day,” she explained.
“But I could tell she was a loving and devoted mother.”
Elani, who had significant disabilities, relied heavily on her mother.
The neighbor mentioned that Elani would use a walking frame, and they often walked together outside their home.
A special bus came daily to transport Elani to a school for children with special needs.
The neighbor described Martina as a private individual but noted that she would engage with others, albeit sometimes being moody.
“Sometimes she would smile and say hello, and other times, she would blank you,” she said.
Community’s Response
After the tragic news broke, some neighbors began to organize a collection to buy flowers in memory of the mother and daughter.
One neighbor admitted she had never spoken to them but felt compelled to honor their memory.
“It’s such a shame,” she said, adding that many believed Martina had no family in England.
Flowers were left outside the home, which was cordoned off by police.
The Manchester Evening News reported that investigators are primarily treating the case as a murder-suicide.
GMP confirmed that all known next of kin have been notified and are receiving support from specialized officers.
Support for the Community
A spokesperson for Salford City Council expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends of those who have tragically lost their lives.”
They assured that the council is collaborating with GMP and providing support to both local residents and council staff affected by this incident.
In light of this tragedy, anyone with information is urged to contact the police at 101, quoting log number 998 of September 23.
