Rulani Mokwena Reveals Unwanted Departure from Mamelodi Sundowns Amidst Internal Strife and Club Disagreement in South African Football Scene

Rulani Mokwena has shed light on his departure from Mamelodi Sundowns, refuting claims that he willingly left the club.

Initially announced as an amicable split by the club, Mokwena revealed in an interview with Robert Marawa that he was compelled to leave against his wishes.

“I didn’t want to leave; I have to make that clear that I didn’t want to leave.

My hand was forced,” Mokwena expressed, hinting at undisclosed internal conflicts that led to his unexpected exit.

This statement contradicts Sundowns’ earlier assertion of a mutual agreement.

During his tenure, Mokwena achieved significant milestones, including multiple league titles.

However, reports of strained relationships, particularly with sporting director Flemming Berg, clouded his time at the club.

Whether these tensions influenced his departure remains unclear.

Notable Achievements

At just 37, Rulani Mokwena has carved out a remarkable career in South African football.

His coaching stints at Sundowns and Orlando Pirates yielded seven trophies, including four league championships and three Coach of the Season awards.

Statistical Success

Mokwena highlighted his achievements: “91 games, 60 wins, nine losses, and 22 draws.”

These figures underscore his tactical acumen and impressive success rate, establishing him as one of the nation’s foremost coaches.

A Fond Farewell

Despite the circumstances of his departure, Mokwena expressed deep gratitude towards Sundowns, where he spent nearly 12 years.

“Sundowns will always have a special part in my heart,” he reflected, emphasizing the significance of his time with the club.
