A troubling situation has unfolded at Dovestone Reservoir, where a man has gone missing after two people reportedly fell into the water while paddleboarding.
Friends have identified the missing man as Simon Daniels, who fell into the reservoir near Oldham on Sunday afternoon.
Search Efforts Intensify
Emergency responders, including police, fire crews, and paramedics, sprang into action around 2:30 PM after receiving calls about the incident.
While one woman who fell into the water was rescued and treated by paramedics, Simon remains unaccounted for.
Greater Manchester Police have been actively coordinating search efforts, with specialized divers, the coastguard, and mountain rescue teams joining in the search operation.
Continuous Search Operations
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) late Sunday evening, Greater Manchester Police assured the public that they would continue searching throughout the night.
“We are not stopping our search and are doing everything we can to locate the missing man,” they stated.
They also emphasized the need for people to avoid the area as search operations were underway, thanking the public for their patience and understanding during this difficult time.
Fire Service Response
According to a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS), fire crews were alerted shortly before 2:30 PM on Sunday regarding a person in distress in the water.
The response included two fire engines from Mossley and Stalybridge, an enhanced rescue unit from Leigh, a water incident unit from Eccles, an air unit, and two drones—one of which was an underwater drone from Lancashire Fire and Rescue.
A bystander successfully used a throw line to rescue one individual before the fire service arrived.
Looking Ahead
The fire service remained on the scene for nearly five hours, assisting with the search efforts alongside police, ambulance services, and mountain rescue teams.
