Sexual Assault Allegations at New Jersey Women’s Prison
Inmate’s Claims of Sexual Assault by Transgender Inmate
A female inmate at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in New Jersey has made disturbing allegations of sexual assault by a transgender inmate with male genitalia. The inmate, who has been incarcerated since 2003, alleges that she was sexually assaulted in September and October of the previous year. She has taken legal action against the New Jersey Department of Corrections, claiming that prison guards failed to take appropriate corrective action in response to the sexually aggressive and harassing behavior of transgender inmates.
Failure to Protect Inmates
The lawsuit against the Department of Corrections contends that even after two female inmates reportedly became pregnant as a result of sexual interactions with transgender inmates, the department did not implement measures to adequately protect inmates. The lawsuit highlights the complainant’s efforts to report the assault by the transgender inmate, who is identified only by initials in the lawsuit. Rather than addressing her concerns, the inmate alleges that she faced disciplinary action as a result.
Transgender Inmate Transferred
The transgender inmate accused of sexual assault has since been transferred to a male facility, as mentioned in the lawsuit. This action was taken following the allegations of sexual assault.
Additional Claims in the Lawsuit
The lawsuit also raises concerns about transgender prisoners being housed with female inmates in areas lacking security camera coverage, raising questions about the safety and oversight of such placements.
Another Disturbing Lawsuit
In a separate lawsuit against the Department of Corrections, a former Edna Mahan inmate alleges that she was coerced into having sexual contact with a male prison guard. According to her claims, on August 21, 2021, the guard entered her cell, instructed her to come to him, and then led her into a bathroom. Once inside, he allegedly turned off his body camera, exposed himself, and demanded sexual acts from the inmate. The lawsuit details that the guard threatened her, suggesting that her prison experience could be made more favorable if she complied.
Multiple Lawsuits Against Edna Mahan
These cases are just two examples of numerous lawsuits brought against the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women. In response to widespread abuse scandals involving prison guards, Governor Phil Murphy ordered the prison’s closure in June 2021. However, as of now, no new location has been announced for the facility, and the estimated cost of the project is $300 million. Governor Murphy had sought $90 million in the fiscal budget for the closure of the prison.
