Pregnant Woman Avoids Jail for Attacking Boyfriend Amid Toxic Relationship

Court Spares Pregnant Bank Worker Jail After Stabbing Boyfriend

Kimberley Blyth, a pregnant bank worker, avoided jail time despite stabbing her boyfriend, Alan Kellett, twice during an altercation following a night out.

The judge at Newcastle Crown Court suspended the prison sentence to ensure Blyth, now expecting someone else’s baby, wouldn’t give birth in jail.

Details of the Altercation

The couple, involved in a ‘toxic’ relationship, had a history of violence allegations reported to the police by both parties. On April 2, 2022, after a night of drinking, an altercation ensued in their kitchen.

Blyth, feeling assaulted, picked up a knife and attacked Kellett, causing two wounds to his arm.

Aftermath and Victim’s Statement

Following the stabbing, Kellett sought help from his mother, describing the severity of his injuries and the significant blood loss.

The police arrived to find Kellett ‘covered in blood.’ In his victim statement, Kellett expressed fear for his life during the assault and detailed the lasting physical and emotional impact of the incident.

Defense and Sentencing

Blyth admitted to the wounding, claiming self-defense as she believed Kellett had assaulted her. The defense highlighted the tumultuous nature of their relationship and Blyth’s remorse.

Despite acknowledging the severity of the injuries, the judge emphasized Blyth’s pregnancy and the potential separation of the newborn from its mother in prison as a deciding factor in the suspended sentence.

Sentence Details

Blyth received a 21-month suspended sentence for two years, along with 150 hours of unpaid work and a five-year restraining order against Kellett.

The court considered her prior convictions, her remorse, and the potential impact on her pregnancy while determining the sentence.
