In Praise of Archbishop Ieronymos II, Pope Francis Calls for Deeper Cultural and Theological Ties

During a recent audience, Pope Francis extended a special greeting to His Beatitude Ieronymos II, the Archbishop of Athens and all Greece.

The pontiff described him as “a man of deep faith and a wise pastor,” highlighting his significant spiritual and pastoral contributions.

Two Decades of Collaboration:

The Pope emphasized the ongoing collaboration between the Apostolikí Diakonía and the Catholic Committee for Cultural Collaboration over the past 20 years.

Despite challenges such as Greece’s economic crisis and the pandemic, these bodies have successfully promoted numerous cultural and educational projects of mutual interest.

Formation for the Future:

Pope Francis underscored the importance of providing cultural, theological, and ecumenical formation for younger generations.

He believes that youth, with their hope rooted in faith, have the potential to overcome historical antagonisms and prejudices, fostering a brotherly and sisterly bond between Catholics and Orthodox Christians.

Educational Exchange Initiative:

The Holy Father announced that next summer, a group of Catholic students will attend the Theological College of Athens.

There, they will gain knowledge of the modern Greek language and the Orthodox Church, furthering their ecumenical education.

Journeying Toward Unity:

Concluding his address, Pope Francis expressed that by “journeying together, working together, and praying together,” Christians prepare to receive the divine gift of unity.

He envisions this unity as a harmonious communion, enriched by legitimate diversity and inspired by the Holy Spirit.
