Paula Abdul’s Lawsuit Allegations
Renowned singer and former American Idol judge Paula Abdul has filed a lawsuit against TV producer Nigel Lythgoe, accusing him of multiple instances of sexual assault and workplace harassment.
The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles, outlines disturbing incidents of alleged assault and mistreatment.
Alleged Assault and Workplace Harassment
Abdul, 61, claimed that Lythgoe, 74, subjected her to verbal insults and belittlement during discussions about her role on a singing competition series, “Pop Idol,” back in 2001.
She detailed being demeaned and disrespected, expressing grave concerns to her representatives.
Disturbing Incidents
The lawsuit recounts two disturbing instances of alleged sexual assault. One incident reportedly occurred during the early seasons of American Idol while on tour.
Abdul claimed Lythgoe forcibly groped and kissed her in an elevator, causing her to report the incident to her representatives.
Another Alleged Assault
Abdul also described an incident during a dinner at Lythgoe’s house in 2015, where she accused him of attempting to force himself on her and making inappropriate advances, despite her clear refusal.
Workplace Discrimination
The lawsuit went beyond the assault claims, alleging discrimination in compensation and treatment compared to her male counterparts on American Idol.
Abdul claimed she faced constant bullying, humiliation, and harassment from Lythgoe and other show representatives.
Legal Action and California Law
Paula Abdul decided to file the lawsuit under California’s Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act, which offers a three-year window for survivors of sexual assault to seek damages.
The law aims to revive claims that were previously barred by the statute of limitations.
Career and Personal Background
Abdul, known for her successful choreography and music career, was previously married to Emilio Estevez and Brad Beckerman.
Lythgoe, who hails from England, began his career in performance before entering the television industry and was formerly married to Bonita Shawe.
