The ill-fated flight, which was en route from Cascavel to Guarulhos, was cruising at an altitude of 17,000 feet when it suddenly began a rapid descent. Chilling footage shared by Brazil’s TV GloboNews captured the terrifying moment as the plane spiraled towards the ground, ending in a massive plume of black smoke rising from the crash site.

No Survivors Confirmed by Authorities

According to the local firefighters corps, the plane crashed in the city of Vinhedo, and unfortunately, there were no survivors. The São Paulo federal police also reported that one resident was injured as the plane struck several houses in a residential area during its descent. Hospitals in Vinhedo and nearby Valinhos were put on high alert to prepare for any potential casualties, though none have been confirmed beyond the initial impact.

Government and Emergency Response

Brazil’s President Lula addressed the nation, expressing his deep sorrow over the tragedy. “I would like everyone to stand up so that we can observe a minute of silence because a plane has just crashed in the city of Vinhedo, in São Paulo, with 58 passengers and 4 crew members and it appears they all died,” he said in a statement on X.

São Paulo’s Governor Tarcísio de Freitas cut short his trip to Vitória to manage the situation personally. His agency confirmed that teams from the Legal Medical Institute (IML), along with Civil and Military Police, were mobilized to rescue victims and collect bodies from the crash site.

Investigation Underway

The National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) has launched a full investigation into the crash. The aircraft, identified as a 14-year-old ATR 72-500 turboprop with 68 seats, lost 13,000 feet in elevation in less than two minutes before the GPS signal cut out at around 1:30 PM local time. ATR, the French manufacturer of the plane, has expressed its condolences and committed to supporting the investigation.

This devastating incident has left many grieving and searching for answers as authorities work to uncover the cause of the disaster.
