Vice Chancellor Irene Tracey has introduced a set of ‘free speech tips’ designed to encourage students to engage with diverse perspectives during upcoming debates.

A Record-Breaking Year for Oxford
In her annual address, Professor Tracey celebrated Oxford’s achievement of being named the best university in the world for the ninth consecutive year in international rankings.

Highlighting the need for an inclusive environment, Tracey stated, “It is clear we need to reaffirm the importance of free and inclusive speech, diversity of thought, and vibrant exchanges of ideas.”
To facilitate this, Oxford will host a new series of events called the ‘Sheldonian Series’ starting next month.
These events aim to provide a platform for students and staff to hear from scholars across various fields, with the first discussion set for November, shortly after the US presidential election.

In her address, Tracey encouraged participants to utilize a ‘Free Speech Tips’ document developed by Worcester College, along with input from students, academics, and Heads of House.
This guide includes essential pointers for navigating challenging discussions, such as respecting the right to disagree and acknowledging that being shocked or offended is a part of engaging in meaningful dialogue.

Professor Tracey also remarked on the growing perception of differences—whether in origin, religion, politics, or personal expression—as a threat.
She asserted that it is essential for the university to nurture and celebrate these differences, confident that attempts to create divisions will ultimately fail.
