…By Jack Sylva for TDPel Media. Abuja, Nigeria – Sixty-three incoming members of Nigeria’s 10th House of Representatives, all from opposition parties, have publicly declared their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) nominees, Tajudeen Abbas and Benjamin Kalu, as Speaker and Deputy Speaker respectively.
The endorsement was conveyed by the spokesperson of the Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) and newly elected representative, Ikenga Ugochinyere, during a press conference in Abuja.
Ugochinyere urged other speaker aspirants who were depending on opposition votes to withdraw from the contest, as the votes were now committed to Abbas and Kalu.
Stressing the importance of looking beyond party affiliations, Ugochinyere emphasized the need to prioritize Nigeria’s best interests and select the most qualified candidates based on merit.
He revealed that the 63 members-elect had formed the TBK Group, with all 63 votes firmly pledged to Abbas.
Ugochinyere promised that the identity and impact of the TBK Group would become evident in the coming days.
Ugochinyere praised Abbas’ qualifications for the Speaker position, highlighting his education, experience, resourcefulness, and integrity.
He also noted that Abbas had proposed a significant number of bills in the 8th and 9th Assemblies, making him the legislator with the highest number of bills, of which 21 had been signed into law by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Amobi Ogah, a member-elect from the Labour Party, echoed his support for Abbas and Kalu, describing them as capable and competent individuals.
Ogah expressed hope for a unique 10th Assembly if both nominees were elected, appealing to his colleagues to support them in the interest of national unity.
This endorsement comes ahead of the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly on June 13, where new Senate and House officers will be elected or confirmed.
It follows the release of the APC’s leadership zoning formula for the 10th National Assembly, which led to some dissatisfied speaker aspirants forming a separate group.
The support from the Minority Parties Forum and the Joint Task – 10th Assembly coalition has further solidified backing for the APC nominees.
The upcoming inauguration will determine if these alliances have succeeded in creating a united front in support of Abbas and Kalu.
