In a rather unusual but hilarious turn of events, an Ohio police officer found himself in a sticky situation when a giant inflatable pumpkin decided to take a detour into the streets.
The incident occurred in Bay Village, a Cleveland suburb located near Lake Erie, where an unexpected call led to a moment that was straight out of a comedy sketch.
The “Runaway Pumpkin” Situation
Late Monday night, local police received a call reporting an odd traffic obstruction — a “runaway pumpkin.”
The massive inflatable decoration had somehow broken free and was now blocking traffic at the intersection of Wolf Road and Saddler Road.
As the officer arrived at the scene, dashcam footage captured the moment he spotted the gigantic pumpkin looming on the road, noticeably larger than the surrounding cars.
Officer vs. Inflatable: The Battle Begins
Determined to clear the road, the officer parked his car in front of the inflatable and confidently approached it, clearly unaware of what was about to happen next.
As soon as he attempted to grab hold of the decoration, a gust of wind sent the pumpkin tumbling right onto him, burying both the officer and his vehicle under its soft, inflatable bulk.
For nearly 30 seconds, the pumpkin continued its wind-powered dance in the street while the officer found himself trapped underneath, unscathed but clearly amused.
Chuckling at the situation, he radioed for backup, jokingly remarking, “This thing is gonna be tough to move.”
Backup Arrives to Wrangle the Pumpkin
It wasn’t long before a second police car arrived on the scene, bringing another officer to help deal with the wayward decoration.
Together, along with a helpful local resident, they managed to remove the inflatable pumpkin from the road.
Though it’s still a mystery if the resident was the original owner, the runaway decoration was eventually returned to its rightful place on someone’s lawn, fully intact.
The Community’s Reaction
The Bay Village Police Department shared the hilarious dashcam footage on their Facebook page, and it quickly became a viral hit with residents.
Comments flooded in, with one person joking, “Omg!! It ate him!” while another humorously remarked, “You know, sometimes, you can’t make this stuff up!!!”
The giant inflatable pumpkin had become something of a local landmark, especially for kids attending Westerly Elementary, which is located nearby.
One parent commented, “Oh no! That’s by Westerly. My kid loves to see that pumpkin every day!”
Another parent added, “I know exactly where this is. My kids love looking at the giant pumpkin from the car window, so I’ll have to show them the video of the pumpkin escape!”
A Lighthearted Reminder
While most found the incident amusing, some used the opportunity to offer practical advice.
One neighbor suggested, “Deflate your decorations during a windstorm,” and expressed relief that the pumpkin hadn’t caused any damage by getting caught in power lines.
In the end, what started as a chaotic scene ended with a few laughs, a memorable story, and a pumpkin safely back on display.
Even NBC’s Today Show briefly covered the lighthearted event, bringing more smiles to people across the country.
