North Carolina IHOP Agrees to Pay $40,000 to Former Employee Who Was Terminated for Refusing to Work on Sundays Due to Religious Beliefs

In a recent case that highlights the importance of religious accommodation in the workplace, an IHOP restaurant in North Carolina has agreed to a $40,000 settlement.

This decision comes after a former employee faced a serious issue regarding his religious beliefs.

The settlement was announced on August 6 by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).

The EEOC, which is responsible for enforcing federal laws against employment discrimination, had filed a lawsuit in 2023 on behalf of the employee. This lawsuit was brought to the U.S. District Court for the Western District of North Carolina.

The employee, who started working as a cook at an IHOP location in Charlotte in January 2021, had requested and received a religious accommodation to avoid working on Sundays.

This accommodation was intended to allow him to observe his religious practices.

However, things took a turn for the worse after a management change in April 2021.

The new general manager reportedly showed hostility towards this accommodation and required the employee to work on Sundays, specifically on April 25 and May 9.

When the employee reiterated his need to refrain from working on Sundays due to his religious beliefs, he was terminated from his position.

Allegations Against Management

The general manager was accused of making derogatory comments about the employee’s religious practices.

It was alleged that the manager told other employees that “religion should not take precedence over [the employee’s] job” and suggested that the employee valued church attendance more than his financial responsibilities.

This case underscores the significance of respecting religious accommodations and the consequences that can arise from failing to do so.
