Nine Members of Florida Family Tragically Die in SUV Crash After Returning from Relative’s Birthday Celebration in Palm Beach County

In a heartbreaking turn of events, a tragic car accident in Florida has claimed the lives of nine members of a single family, including six children. This devastating incident occurred as they were returning from celebrating a relative’s 80th birthday.

The crash took place in Palm Beach County, located in the southeastern part of Florida, on Monday night. Emergency services received reports around 7:30 p.m. about an SUV that had plunged into a canal near Belle Glade.

The vehicle, a 2023 Ford Explorer, was discovered overturned with only its wheels protruding from the water.

Local sources noted that the canal was approximately 6 feet deep and the surrounding area was exceptionally muddy due to recent heavy rainfall

Of the ten people in the SUV, four were pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining six were rushed to the hospital, where five subsequently passed away, leaving one in critical condition.

The deceased have been identified as 5-year-old Kamdien Edwards, 21-year-old Anyia Monique Lee Tucker, 56-year-old Pamela Wiggins (who was driving), 1-year-old Naleia Tucker, 5-year-old Yasire Smith, 8-year-old Imani Andrea Ajani Hall, 14-year-old Michael Anthony Hall Jr., 30-year-old Leiana Alyse Hall, and 3-year-old Ziare Mack. The sole survivor is 26-year-old Jorden Hall.

Impact and Investigation

Palm Beach County Fire Rescue Capt. Tom Reyes, who has served for 20 years, described this as one of the most challenging scenes he’s encountered. The family was in Florida to celebrate an elderly relative’s 80th birthday and was on their way to the airport to return to Connecticut when the accident occurred.

There are serious concerns about whether this tragedy could have been avoided. A local crash report revealed that none of the occupants were using seat belts at the time of the accident.

Additionally, the report notes that Wiggins did not navigate a particularly sharp curve correctly, although it does not specify the vehicle’s speed at the time of the crash. Ford Explorers are also recommended to carry no more than seven passengers, which adds another layer of scrutiny to the circumstances.

Vehicle Issues and Family’s Grief

Family members have indicated that the rental vehicle was experiencing problems, which they had reported to the rental company. However, due to their tight schedule and the long drive back to Connecticut, they opted not to replace the vehicle.

Annette Edwards, who lost her only son Kamdien in the accident, shared her deep sorrow, saying, “It feels like a bad dream.” She recalled her son as a joyful and fearless child who was about to start school.

Antoine Wright, a cousin, urged for prayers and support for the grieving family, highlighting their need for strength during this difficult time.

Support for the Family

A GoFundMe page has been established to help cover the funeral expenses for the nine victims. As of now, nearly $15,000 has been raised toward the $100,000 goal.

This tragedy has left a profound impact on the community, and support for the affected family continues to pour in.
