In a recent clash, at least six Nigerien soldiers lost their lives in a confrontation with suspected Jihadists in the West African nation.
The incident occurred near the town of Sanam in the western region.
Riding on motorbikes, the suspected Jihadists ambushed the troops, resulting in the casualties.
The National Guard High Command released a statement indicating that during the engagement, the Nigerien soldiers managed to eliminate at least ten of the suspected terrorists.
Sanam is situated in the Tillaberi tri-border area, a zone where Niger shares borders with Mali and Burkina Faso.
This region has experienced a prevalence of jihadist attacks.
Security Concerns Amidst Political Upheaval
This incident comes at a time when the country is under a military regime following the overthrow of the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
General Abdourahamane Tiani, the leader of the coup, cited the deteriorating security situation in the nation as a justification for the overthrow.
This power transition has stirred concerns about the country’s political stability and security.
Response from Nigerian Activist and Military Officials
A prominent Nigerian activist, Aisha Yesufu, has weighed in on the situation.
She reacted to a statement by the Nigerian Military, affirming that the military has no intention of staging a coup in Nigeria.
Yesufu stressed the importance of the military’s focus on its primary role of safeguarding the country’s territorial integrity.
She emphasized that the judiciary is responsible for addressing issues related to leaders who manipulate the electoral process.
In response to queries about the military’s stance, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) issued a statement.
The DHQ expressed contentment with the current democratic regime and reiterated its commitment to adhere to constitutional authority.
The DHQ director, Tukur Gusau, dismissed an online report regarding the welfare concerns of the armed forces.
He condemned the report’s suggestion that the military should interfere in the democratic process, deeming it unpatriotic and distracting from the military’s constitutional responsibilities.
Focus on Constitutional Duties
Aisha Yesufu urged the military to maintain its focus on its constitutional duty of protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
She underscored that the responsibility of removing leaders who manipulate elections rests with the judiciary.
Yesufu also emphasized that the legislature holds the authority to address issues of leadership competence.
