…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed dissatisfaction with the Nigerian National Petrol Company Limited (NNPCL) over the recent adjustment of pump prices for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol).
This comes after President Bola Tinubu declared the end of the fuel subsidy regime during his inaugural address.
NLC President Calls the Situation Unfortunate
NLC President, Joe Ajaero, issued a statement on Wednesday responding to the upward revision of petrol prices.
Ajaero described the situation as regrettable, emphasizing the necessity of good faith negotiation and expressing condemnation of the government’s actions.
NLC Urges NNPC to Withdraw Pricing Template
Ajaero called on the federal government to instruct the NNPC to withdraw the “vexatious” pricing template, which he believes undermines the ongoing dialogue between stakeholders in the oil and gas sector.
The NLC president insisted that Nigerians will not accept any form of manipulation from any party involved, especially the government representatives.
NLC Concerned About Deregulation and Fixed Prices
The NLC expressed concern about the inconsistency of the government’s approach, as it simultaneously talks about deregulation while fixing the prices of petroleum products.
Ajaero argued that this contradicts the spirit of a free market and called the government’s actions an ambush that hinders the dialogue process.
NLC’s Commitment to Dialogue Hindered
Ajaero urged the government to allow free-flowing discussions by withdrawing the pricing template.
The NLC emphasized the importance of flexibility, concessions, and reasonable accommodation to achieve the best outcome for the Nigerian people.
The statement concluded with concerns that the government’s actions might be jeopardizing the dialogue process.
