New Information Revealed in Triple Shooting at Skyline High School Graduation

New information has surfaced regarding the triple shooting that occurred during the graduation ceremony at Skyline High School in Oakland.

On May 23, as the ceremony was concluding around 7:45 p.m., three individuals were shot.

Origin of the Shooting and Arrests

The Oakland Police Department (OPD) reported that the shooting resulted from a confrontation between two groups. OPD officers have arrested one man in connection to the incident.

Initial Police Response

Before OPD officers arrived at the scene, officers from the East Bay Regional Parks Police Department (EBRPPD) were the first to respond.

They were monitoring the OPD radio channel and were in the vicinity when the incident occurred.

Witnesses and Suspect Pursuit

Witnesses at the scene informed EBRPPD officers that the suspects had fled into Anthony Chabot Regional Park towards Redwood Road.

All EBRPPD units responded to the area. Three male juveniles ran into the Upper San Leandro watershed area upon seeing an officer.

Apprehension and Evidence

Officers pursued the juveniles, apprehended one of them, and discovered that he was carrying a loaded Glock 27 pistol and a car key for a Maserati. The luxury car had been carjacked and stolen in Oakland.

Assistance to Victims

At Skyline High School, an EBRPPD officer found a woman with a gunshot wound in her thigh.

The officer applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding and the victim was transported to a local hospital.

Another victim was found at the school, and a third was located at a hospital.

Conclusion of the Manhunt

The police conducted a 90-minute manhunt for the two remaining juveniles and eventually apprehended them. According to the OPD, all shooting victims are expected to survive.

Incident During Graduation Ceremony

The shooting took place as the graduation ceremony was ending, with many students and families already having left.

Oakland Unified School District Superintendent Kyla Johnson-Trammell praised the staff for their immediate response to manage the situation until the police arrived.

She described the incident as “heartbreaking and absolutely unacceptable.”

Superintendent’s Statement

Superintendent Johnson-Trammell expressed shared frustration and devastation over the incident, extending support to the victims, their families, and the entire graduating class of 2024.

She noted that this class had missed their middle school graduation due to the COVID pandemic and had started high school with online learning.

Ongoing Investigation and Reward

The investigation into the triple shooting is ongoing, and a $15,000 reward is being offered for information leading to further arrests.

People with videos or photos are urged to email them to cidvideos@oaklandca.gov, and anyone with information should call 510-238-3426.
