When it comes to nurturing talent, Mxolisi Silango knows a thing or two.
He’s been instrumental in shaping the skills of Relebohile Mofokeng during their time at the School of Excellence Academy.
Recently, he shared his perspective on whether Mofokeng is ready to take his game overseas.
Impressive Rise in South African Football
Mofokeng has been making waves in South African football, particularly with his standout performances for Pirates.
Despite his young age of 19, he’s already made a significant impact, racking up 38 appearances, scoring five goals, and assisting six times in the DStv Premiership.
National Recognition and Awards
His talent hasn’t gone unnoticed.
Mofokeng earned his first call-up to the Bafana Bafana squad, making his debut in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Zimbabwe.
He also clinched two prestigious awards at the 2023/24 PSL Awards: DStv Premiership Young Player of The Season and Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player.
Silango’s Confidence in Mofokeng
According to Silango, Mofokeng is primed for a move abroad.
He believes Mofokeng possesses all the necessary qualities: youth, talent, intelligence, adaptability, and peak performance on the field.
“If someone like Rele [Relebohile Mofokeng] is ready, you should give the lad a chance,” Silango expressed to FARPost.
“He’s almost there; you can see he’s on the verge of something great.”
Ready for the Next Step
Silango dismisses the notion of needing another season in the PSL for Mofokeng.
Instead, he advocates seizing the opportunity to play abroad and make a significant impact internationally.
“It would be a fantastic move for our country; he’s still young, extremely talented, and motivated to prove himself,” Silango added.
“I truly believe he’s prepared.”
Looking Ahead
Should an overseas opportunity arise, Silango hopes Mofokeng lands in a team where he can develop further and continue his upward trajectory as a player.
