After a remarkable 57 years of marriage, Sir Michael Palin opens up about his journey with his late wife, Helen, who he met as a teenager during a holiday in Suffolk.
Their bond, which began in the seaside town of Southwold at the tender age of 16, blossomed into a deep connection that saw them marry at 22.
However, as Helen faced serious health challenges, Michael found himself torn between his love for her and his passion for travel documentaries.
A Difficult Decision
Michael, now 81, expressed some regrets about leaving Helen during her illness to pursue his travel projects.
For several years, she had battled chronic pain and later suffered from kidney failure.
While he acknowledges that he doesn’t often dwell on regrets, he admitted that his later travels, especially to places like North Korea, coincided with Helen’s declining health.
“She wasn’t in the best shape to look after herself,” he shared.
Although he felt she would have preferred him to stay, he emphasized that his love for travel wasn’t about escaping home but rather a deep-seated passion for exploration.
The Power of Writing
In his new book, There and Back, Michael reflects on these experiences through the lens of his diaries.
He found solace in writing about the challenges they faced during Helen’s illness, stating, “Helen was ill for a couple of years… writing this down helped me to deal with it.
I needed to remember all that.”
Even while he was traveling to film documentaries in North Korea and Iraq after leaving the BBC in 2012, he was juggling the emotional weight of his wife’s condition.
A Shift in Television
Sir Michael also shared his frustration with the changes he encountered at the BBC after more than two decades with the network.
He felt a growing sense of control from the organization, which altered the creative direction of his shows.
“The BBC wanted to interfere a little more and control it,” he explained.
The network’s new presentation style, which focused on showcasing highlights early in the show, left him feeling stifled creatively.
Holding Onto Memories
More than a year after Helen’s passing, Michael still finds comfort in her presence at home.
He revealed that her clothes remain in the cupboard, creating an atmosphere that feels as if she’s still there.
“I know it seems odd, but I carry on as though Helen is still here,” he confessed.
The memories associated with her belongings serve as cherished reminders of their life together.
“Get rid of all those props, and I’d be in a different play, playing a different character,” he noted.
For now, he finds peace in maintaining the familiar surroundings that tell their shared story, believing that Helen would want him to continue living life fully.
