A devastating explosion in Newcastle has prompted Kieran Chapman, a star from Married At First Sight UK, to take action by launching a fundraiser for the affected families.
The explosion claimed the life of a seven-year-old boy and occurred early yesterday morning in South Benwell, destroying several flats and triggering a massive emergency response.
The Aftermath of the Explosion
The explosion happened around 12:45 AM, resulting in significant destruction and leaving the young boy dead at the scene.
Authorities reported that six others were taken to the hospital for treatment.
This morning, gas vans were deployed to the site as searches continued to ensure that everyone was accounted for.
Upon hearing about the tragedy, Kieran expressed his shock, stating, “I received a message about what had happened this morning and my jaw just dropped. I can only imagine the pain of the family who lost their son, and I felt compelled to help.”
He highlighted the importance of community support, saying, “It’s a devastating situation, and my heart breaks for all the families involved. I believe in the strength of the West End community, and I want to contribute to its healing.”
Community Support and Shelter for Evacuated Families
Kieran’s fundraiser is working in tandem with efforts from the Merton Lodge community center, which has stepped up to provide shelter for approximately 50 evacuated families.
Manager Emma Skillen initiated this support after the explosion, collecting donations throughout the day to assist those in need.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation, with police confirming that inquiries are underway.
Superintendent Darren Adams addressed the situation, expressing his condolences: “It is with great sadness that I stand in front of you today following the tragic death of a young child. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, he sadly died at the scene. This is a truly devastating outcome.”
Investigations Underway
Superintendent Adams noted that six individuals were hospitalized with varying injuries, while numerous others were evacuated and are receiving support from Newcastle City Council.
“The loss and pain they must be suffering is unimaginable,” he remarked, emphasizing the community’s need to come together during this difficult time.
Investigations into the explosion remain in their early stages, with authorities appealing for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.
The cordon around the site will likely remain in place for some time as officials work diligently to piece together the events leading up to this tragedy.
Emergency Services Respond
Emergency responders were seen sifting through the debris, searching for any additional victims in the aftermath.
The damage was extensive, with roofs of attached properties completely collapsed and personal belongings scattered across the streets.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Lynsey McVay from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service reported that six flats were severely impacted, with two bearing the brunt of the explosion.
Crews arrived on the scene within five minutes, and she confirmed that all fires have now been extinguished.
At the height of the response, eight fire engines and specialized units, including an urban search and rescue team, were deployed to manage the situation.
As the community grapples with this tragic loss, efforts to support those affected continue, showcasing the resilience and unity of Newcastle’s residents.
