Former head coach of Mamelodi Sundowns, Johan Neeskens, has passed away at the age of 73 in the Netherlands.
This week, the Betway Premiership champions shared the news, leaving fans and players in shock.
Remembering Johan Neeskens
The announcement came from Neeskens’ former club, Ajax Amsterdam, on Monday afternoon.
Ajax expressed their sorrow in a heartfelt statement: “We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Johan Neeskens. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”
The club concluded their tribute with a touching sentiment: “Rest in peace, Ajax legend.”
Neeskens had a distinguished playing career, including a notable stint at FC Barcelona, before transitioning into coaching.
He led Mamelodi Sundowns from July 2011 to July 2012, during which he managed to secure 18 wins out of 50 matches, with 16 losses and 16 draws.
After his time at Sundowns, he moved on to coach Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray.
Mamelodi Sundowns’ Tribute
Mamelodi Sundowns released a statement reflecting on Neeskens’ legacy and the impact he made on the club.
“The Chairman and the Motsepe Family, the Board of Directors, Technical Team, Players, Management, Staff, Supporters of Mamelodi Sundowns FC & the entire Yellow Nation express their deepest condolences to Marlis and the entire family as we mourn the loss of former Mamelodi Sundowns Coach and Dutch Legend, Johan Neeskens,” the club said.
Describing Neeskens as one of the greatest players of all time, they acknowledged his significant role as head coach from July 2011 to December 2012.
The club added, “We pray that the Almighty God comforts and strengthens his family, friends, the Dutch Nation, and the world at large. The legacy, life, and memory of the beloved Johan Neeskens will live on beyond our time.”
