Mamelodi Sundowns coach, Manqoba Mngqithi, has provided fans with some important updates regarding Thembinkosi Lorch’s injury status.
The midfielder has been a key player for the team since joining them mid-season, but his journey has been marked by setbacks.
Lorch’s Journey with Sundowns
Lorch’s move to Mamelodi Sundowns during the 2023/24 season raised eyebrows across the Premier Soccer League (PSL).
After all, he was a standout star for Orlando Pirates, and many were surprised when he left the Soweto giants for their rivals in Tshwane.
Despite the hype around his arrival, Lorch has struggled to stay on the pitch consistently, with injuries hampering his progress.
In the Sundowns’ colors, Lorch has shown flashes of brilliance, making 20 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals, and assisting three more.
However, fans have been left wanting more, as injuries have kept him sidelined for large parts of the season.
Recent Injuries and Absences
As the current season unfolds, Lorch is yet to feature in any of the team’s matches, including the MTN8 fixtures.
Sundowns are gearing up for their next big challenge, taking on Mbabane Swallows from Eswatini in the CAF Champions League’s second preliminary round.
But it’s unlikely that Lorch will be part of the squad for that game either.
His last appearance dates back to May 2024, when he played in the Nedbank Cup semi-final against Stellenbosch FC, helping the team secure a 2-1 victory by providing a crucial assist.
Coach Manqoba Mngqithi’s Injury Update
Speaking on Lorch’s current situation, Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi shared that Lorch is nearing a return.
The 53-year-old coach expressed optimism about Lorch’s recovery, but also acknowledged a minor setback.
“Lorch is getting close to making it back into the matchday squad,” Mngqithi explained.
“He played in a friendly against Sekhukhune United and has been training well.
Unfortunately, he picked up a minor hamstring strain in training, which forced him to cut the session short.”
Despite this recent hiccup, Mngqithi remains positive about Lorch’s potential impact once he’s fully fit.
He also praised the player’s professionalism and work ethic throughout his rehabilitation process.
Sipho Mbule Also Nearing Return
In addition to Lorch’s update, Mngqithi provided a positive outlook on another injured player, midfielder Sipho Mbule.
The coach revealed that Mbule has resumed full training and may soon be available for selection.
“Sipho has started full training again, and it’s just a matter of getting the numbers and fitness right.
It’s up to him now, but he’s been training well,” Mngqithi added.
What Lies Ahead?
With two key players on the cusp of returning to action, Sundowns fans will be hoping for a full-strength squad soon.
As they prepare for their next CAF Champions League clash, the focus remains on recovery and getting back to winning ways with their star players fit and ready to contribute.
